Goodness Is Not a Thing

Goodness is not a thing, it cannot be created out of works or from outward behaviour or even good thinking. Most people who are trying to be good get it wrong because the procedure to follow can be a little tricky. To be good one must firstly be good and then proceed on to doing good. Many people have this order confused and after falling into doing good before being good end up having all their good works refused and are themselves given terrible names such as “Do Gooder.” Do Gooder is a dreadful name, an especially reviled name, because even those who fall into doing bad are never called “Do Badders.”

Goodness isn’t rightness in the self righteous sense – who needs a dose of politics or religion with their bowl of soup? Many times as a beggar on the roads of life, I have begged “just a bowl of soup please, just the soup and maybe also a little piece of bread” but never have I begged for conversion or correction from the hands of the merciful. Just a little food and a warm place to sleep is all I require, lest I develop indigestion from all that is hard to swallow. Only the truly good and never the uncharitable charitable understand that goodness is a state of being, not a state of doing.
